BBQ and
America
by Monty Tyler

You know what man?....( my son will tell you anytime I start a conversation with "you know what man" that it is going to be a very serious conversation).    Let there be no doubt.....I consider this a very serious conversation so I'm going to say it again.......YOU KNOW WHAT MAN?  All my life I have been told either first hand, through the news, or from people who were not lucky enough to be born in the U.S.A.
This is the greatest country in the world.  I believe Ronald Reagan said that you can judge how great a country is by how many people are trying to get in versus how many people are trying to get out.  I think that pretty much sums up what we are all about.  I have had the opportunity to travel a good bit lately both by plane and by car.  One thing that always pops up on my radar is how much farmland and how many people live out in the country away from the bright lights of the city.  Rural America at it's finest.  I have done a lot of weekend trips around my home state of Texas and one thing pops up time and time again.  BBQ!!!  I've seen the small modest homes that border the country roads and there is a similar pattern for each home.  You will see a large number of cars parked in front, beside and even behind the small country home.  You will also see a large group of people gathered around what has become a staple in every backyard.......the BBQ Pit.  In today's time what other device garners as much attention and respect as the simple BBQ pit?  I will have to agree that the big screen TV on superbowl Sunday is a pretty big event but that's one weekend out of the year AND in most cases the BBQ pit is still a main attraction during the Superbowl.  I can only imagine the conversations taking place around the pit as I drive down the backroads of America.  You just know that there is one person there that the others look up to as the "BBQ King or Queen" of the area.  I let my imagination run wild....in fact I couldn't stop it if I tried.  Just think of the information that is being passed on to the younger generations during these backyard events.  Imagine the BBQ cooking tips that are passed along.  I would venture to say that most if not all of the techniques we have used at BBQ Competitions all started in the backyards of America.  As nice as it would be to be able to bottle all of the different sauces and spice mixtures and whatever else these fine people are using to make there BBQ extra special, I would rather be able to bottle up the "Spirit" that surrounds the family BBQ event and send that to everyone in the world.  Being far removed from the economical and political aspects of everyday life and thrown smack dab into the middle of Americana......It just couldn't get much better than that.  The next time you drive by one of these events in someone's backyard, give them a big ol' wave.  I'm betting that you are going to get several waves right back at you.  That's just America baby.  That is what we are all about.
